Travelling to Bengaluru?

Are you planning on travelling to Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore) for work? Get to know India’s undisputed tech capital better in this comprehensive guide for business travellers.

From its early days as a fortified settlement to its transformation into the capital of the state of Karnataka and one of India’s most important technology powerhouses, Bengaluru has built a reputation as a city with one foot in the future and another in the past.

Founded in the 16th century by Kempe Gowda I, Bengaluru began as a small fortified town. Over the centuries, it passed through the hands of several rulers before becoming part of British India. The city’s more recent history has been shaped by its emergence as a centre for science, engineering and technology, earning it the nickname India’s Silicon Valley.

Within the city’s corporate landscape – including the Central Business District, Whitefield and Electronic City areas – multinational corporations sit side-by-side with ambitious tech startups.

In this comprehensive guide to Bengaluru for business travellers, we’ll take a closer look at navigating the city’s unique corporate landscape, share our top tips for getting around, and pick out three of the best things to see or do when you have some time away from the meeting room.

Getting to Bengaluru

By air

ವಿಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ

Bengaluru is served by Kempegowda International Airport (BLR), located around 20 miles (35 km) north of central Bengaluru. Several airlines operate direct services to Bengaluru from major cities across India, Asia, the Middle East and Europe.

Travel tip: Check where your meetings are located before choosing your transport from the airport. The city's business districts are spread across different parts of the city, so your best option can vary depending on where you're staying.

By rail

ರೈಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ

Bengaluru is well connected to cities across India by rail, making Indian Railways a practical option. The city is served by several railway stations, including KSR Bengaluru City Junction in the centre and Yesvantpur Junction to the northwest. Long-distance services connect Bengaluru with destinations including Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi.

Travel tip: For longer journeys, consider booking an air-conditioned sleeper or executive class service on an overnight train. They're convenient if you want to avoid a separate night in a hotel.

By road

ರಸ್ತೆ ಮೂಲಕ

Bengaluru is well connected by major highways that link the city with destinations including Mysuru, Chennai and Mumbai. There's also a network of national and state highways if you're looking to explore the wider region and state of Karnataka.

Travel tip: Uber and Ola are widely used in Bengaluru, including for airport transfers. At Kempegowda International Airport, follow the app's directions to the designated pickup area.

Business culture & etiquette

Bengaluru’s business culture is shaped by its position as a growing power in the technology sector.

Greetings

A handshake is the most familiar business greeting in Bengaluru, particularly in the city’s international technology sector. You may also encounter namaste, with the palms brought together in front of the chest, particularly in more traditional or formal settings. If someone greets you this way, returning the gesture is perfectly appropriate.

Meetings

It is quite normal for the first few minutes of a meeting to be spent talking about something other than the business at hand. A coffee, a question about how someone’s day is going or a little conversation about Bengaluru can be part of building the relationship rather than time being wasted before the “real” meeting begins.

Dress Code

There isn’t one Bengaluru business uniform. A technology start-up may be perfectly happy with jeans and a shirt, while a meeting with a bank, law firm or senior corporate team calls for something considerably smarter. For a first meeting, smart business-casual is usually a safe middle ground.

Relationships

Getting to know people is an important part of doing business in Bengaluru. Don’t be surprised if a meeting starts with a coffee and a bit of conversation before anyone gets down to business. Asking about someone’s day or chatting about the city is often just part of getting to know each other.

💡 Top Travel Tip

A "yes" isn't always a yes. Communication can be deliberately polite, particularly when someone doesn't want to give a blunt refusal or contradict another person in the room.

Safety & practical advice

Bengaluru is generally safe for business travellers, but keep an eye on your belongings in crowded places and take a little more care late at night, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the area.

Food & Drink

Bengaluru has an enormous food scene, from South Indian breakfasts to international restaurants and late-night cafés. Coffee is also a big part of local life. Tap water isn’t generally recommended for visitors, so stick to bottled or filtered water. If you’re set on eating street food, opt for busy stalls with a steady stream of customers.

Out & About

If you’re heading out with colleagues, remember that Bengaluru can be quite conservative in some settings despite its modern image. Dress a little more modestly when visiting religious or traditional places, and follow local signs about footwear and photography.

Getting Around

Bengaluru traffic can be one of the biggest surprises for first-time visitors. Roads are busy, traffic can be unpredictable, and journeys that look short on a map can take a long time, particularly during the morning and evening rush hours.

Weather

Bengaluru is known for having a relatively mild climate compared with many other Indian cities. Days are generally warm rather than intensely hot, although temperatures rise during the hotter months. The city has distinct rainy periods, and heavy showers can arrive quite suddenly. A small umbrella is worth carrying, particularly during the monsoon months.

Emergency Services

India’s main emergency number is 112, which connects to emergency services including police, fire and medical assistance. 100 is also used for police emergencies and 108 for ambulance services in many parts of India

💡 Top Travel Tip

In Bengaluru, some of the trickiest bits of getting around can be under your feet. Pavements can be uneven, interrupted by steps, open drains, loose paving or parked vehicles, and they can become particularly awkward after heavy rain.

Best destinations for business travellers

Bengaluru Central Business District
01

Central Business District

One of Bengaluru’s most established business districts, the CBD stretches around MG Road, Residency Road, Vittal Mallya Road and UB City, with a dense mix of corporate offices, luxury hotels, restaurants and meeting spaces. It is also one of the more convenient areas for business travellers, with good Namma Metro connections and plenty to do after the working day.

Whitefield Bengaluru
02

Whitefield

Bengaluru’s major eastern technology and corporate hub, Whitefield is home to ITPL, EPIP Zone and a large concentration of multinational companies and technology parks. It has a strong selection of business hotels and is now connected to central Bengaluru by the Purple Line metro, making it a practical choice if your meetings are concentrated on the eastern side of the city.

Outer Ring Road Bengaluru
03

Outer Ring Road

The Outer Ring Road (ORR) is at the heart of Bengaluru’s enormous technology corridor, running through areas such as Marathahalli, Bellandur and Kadubeesanahalli. Major campuses including Embassy TechVillage, RMZ Ecospace and Ecoworld make this one of the city's biggest commercial office markets, with plenty of corporate workplaces and business hotels nearby. The catch is traffic, which can make even relatively short journeys painfully slow.

How to Get Around the City

Metro

Bengaluru's Namma Metro is one of the quickest ways to avoid the city's notoriously busy roads. The Purple Line is particularly useful for business travellers, linking the central business district with areas including Indiranagar and Whitefield. The Green Line runs through central Bengaluru and connects areas to the north and south of the city. Metro trains are generally clean, air-conditioned and easy to use, although the network does not yet reach every major business district. For journeys that are covered by the Metro, it can be a much more predictable option than travelling by road during busy periods.

Auto-rickshaws

Bengaluru's auto-rickshaws are a handy option for shorter journeys, particularly when your destination is awkward to reach by Metro. They are easy to spot and can be found throughout the city, but for visitors it is generally simpler to book one through an app rather than negotiate a fare on the street. Uber and Ola both offer auto-rickshaw bookings in Bengaluru. They are particularly useful for the last part of a journey from a Metro station, although expect the ride to be considerably more exposed to traffic than travelling by Metro.

App-based taxis

Uber and Ola are widely used in Bengaluru and are often the easiest option for business travellers, particularly when carrying luggage or travelling between meetings. Both services allow you to book and pay through the app, avoiding the need to negotiate a fare. They are also useful for airport transfers, although allow plenty of extra time for the journey, as Bengaluru traffic can make travel times highly unpredictable. At Bengaluru Airport, follow the app's instructions for the designated pick-up area rather than accepting offers from drivers inside the terminal.

Top 3 things to see or do in Bengaluru

Lalbagh Botanical Garden in Bengaluru
1

Lalbagh Botanical Garden

If you need a break from Bengaluru's traffic and office districts, Lalbagh Botanical Garden is one of the city's best escapes. The huge gardens date back to the 18th century and are home to an impressive collection of tropical and subtropical plants, old trees and winding paths.

The famous Glass House is the centrepiece, but the real pleasure is simply walking through the gardens. It is particularly good for an early morning visit, before the heat and crowds build up.

Bengaluru Palace
2

Bengaluru Palace

Built in the 19th century for the Wadiyar royal family, Bengaluru Palace is one of the city's most distinctive historic buildings. Its Tudor-style architecture, turrets and elaborate interiors feel a world away from the glass towers and technology campuses that dominate modern Bengaluru.

The palace grounds are also used for concerts and events, so it is worth checking what's happening during your visit. Allow around an hour or two to explore the building and grounds without having to turn it into a full afternoon excursion.

Cubbon Park in Bengaluru
3

Cubbon Park

Right in the middle of Bengaluru, Cubbon Park is a useful reminder of why the city earned its reputation as the Garden City. Its broad paths, mature trees and open lawns make it a surprisingly peaceful place to escape the noise of the surrounding city.

It is particularly suited to a short morning or early-evening visit, rather than something that needs a whole day. The park is also close to attractions including the Vidhana Soudha and several of central Bengaluru's museums and galleries, making it easy to combine with other plans.
