HEPA Filters

what they are and how they work

As airlines begin to fly again, would-be passengers may be concerned about the potential for the spread of coronavirus on board. Thankfully these concerns can be avoided in aircraft utilising HEPA filters. Today we look at how HEPA filters work in this step by step guide…

STEP 1

Cabin air extracted through HEPA

Cabin air is extracted into the air conditioning unit through High-Efficiency Particulate Air filters (HEPA).

STEP 2

R

99.9% of particles removed

HEPA filters remove 99.9% of microscopic particles like bacteria, viruses, and fungi from the air – as effective as the filters used in hospital theatres.

STEP 3

Cleaned air mixed with fresh

The cleaned and filtered cabin air is mixed with fresh air drawn in from outside.

STEP 4

Mixed air recirculated

The mixed air is circulated back into the cabin at the right pressure and temperature for your comfort.

STEP 5

?

Air flows downwards

Air circulates downwards from the ceiling to the floor to minimise the movement of particles along the cabin.

STEP 6

Fully changed every 2-3 minutes

The air is completely changed every two to three minutes – even more frequently than in a hospital.

As part of a structured, responsible approach, HEPA filters help make air travel much safer and can help to put travellers minds at ease over the hygiene of the cabin.
