The year ahead brings with it a whole new potential for technological advances within the industry. We take a look at how this new technology could improve and transform your travel into 2019 and beyond.

Sometimes it’s tricky to keep up with the latest technology – it can seem like every time you upgrade your phone, a newer, shinier model is released in just a few weeks. So, with the fast-paced nature of technology and it’s fundamental role in the travel industry, we can’t help but wonder how it will transform travel in 2019? Let’s have a look at how we think technology will develop over the next year.

  • Virtual & augmented reality

Hotly tipped as a ‘one to watch’ at the end of last year, virtual and augmented reality has already started to become a real game changer in the travel industry. Imagine being able to experience what your aeroplane seat might look like before even boarding your plane? Well, thanks to virtual reality, this is now a possibility and a service readily available from specific airlines, with others starting to follow suit. We can only begin to imagine what else VA will do for the travel industry! The possibilities are endless, with the opportunity to tour hotel rooms, meeting rooms, and experience something halfway around the world at the comfort of our own desks or homes.

  • Your phone will control everything

We’ve seen them already become train tickets, aeroplane tickets, and even credit/debit cards, but how about unlocking your room with your smartphone? Or even control the temperature of your hotel room? Believe it or not, this technology is becoming commonplace in some hotels! Everything you’ll need is just a few taps away on your mobile phone.

  • Artificial intelligence and voice technology

Cited as the next frontier in travel, artificial intelligence has already gone a long way to begin transforming the travel industry to make your journey easier. Ever used Alexa to ask for train times? Or Google maps to help you get to the airport? These are just a few examples of how artificial intelligence has already made our lives easier, but the future of artificial intelligence will take it to a whole new level. With online automated chatbots and even robots in hotel receptions, artificial intelligence in travel is all about solving problems and making the travel process smoother and stress-free.

  • Wearable technology

If having the ability to control everything from your phone isn’t enough, how about wearable technology? You may have experienced some basic forms of wearable tech already, from wristbands with the ability to unlock certain rooms or parts of a resort, to more intricate designs, such as the Disney ‘MagicBand’ which has a whole range of capabilities from allowing you to FastTrack onto rides, to saving photos of you taking throughout the day. Wearable tech is on the up, and is sure to start making waves in transforming the way we travel.
