Airports are a little bit like marmite – some people find the whole experience exciting, signalling the beginning of their travels, whilst others find them stressful and inefficient. Whichever side of the coin you are on, there’s one thing we can all agree on – going through airport security can be very time consuming!
Whether you’re in a rush to catch your flight, or are just hoping for a little bit more time exploring duty free, then don’t worry – we’ve got some useful tips and tricks to help save you some much-needed time going through those dreaded security checks.
Before You Pack
• Check Your Airline’s List of Banned Items
These can differ from airline to airline, and are often be updated, so be sure to do a quick check on their website before you start packing.
• Make Sure Carry-On Liquids Are Under 100ml
If you’re only taking hand-luggage with you, then be careful with your liquids. Anything over 100ml will not be permitted to fly, and not only will be thrown away at security but will also hold you up. Think about items which might not necessarily come to mind as ‘liquids’ such as toothpaste, mascara etc. You’ll only be allowed one clear, plastic zip-up bags worth of liquids, so we recommend purchasing the mini toiletries in duty free once you’re through security.
At The Airport
• Place Liquids Into A Plastic Bag
Make sure any liquids you’ll be carrying on-board are placed in a clear, resealable plastic bag. Airports do provide these, but it can pay to be organised and have your own which you can pre-pack your liquids into.
• Wear Slip-On Shoes
This can save you valuable time at security, by wearing shoes which can easily be slipped off and on again, rather than having to unlace or un-do multiple buckles.
• Leave Jewellery, Watches and Belts In Your Luggage
These are all common ‘trigger’ items which can set off the security alarms when you walk through. Save time on any additional safety checks or pat downs by removing these before you walk through.
• Keep Your Passport To Hand
When you get to security, make sure your passport and boarding pass are to hand, saving you time having to rummage through either your luggage or handbag to find these.
• Keep Your Laptop Accessible
If you’re travelling with a laptop, it will most likely require to be scanned at security. Save time by keeping it in an accessible location, so you can remove it easily from your luggage when required.
It’s also worth considering, that whilst flying with hand-luggage can save you time as you won’t need to check in any bags, it can actually make the security checks a little longer. By following the above steps, you can help keep this time to a minimum.
