In particular, passports issued by non-member countries are regarded as expired once they have been valid for 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>While the expiry date printed in the passport remains valid for the UK and other non-EU countries around the world, within the European Union the issue date is critical.<\/p>\n<p>On the day you travel, you\u2019ll need your passport to both:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>have at least 6 months left<\/li>\n<li>be less than 10 years old (even if it has 6 months or more left)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_4,3_4&#8243; admin_label=&#8221;borders&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;55px|0px|55px|0px|true|false&#8221; use_custom_width=&#8221;on&#8221; collapsed=&#8221;on&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Subtitle: insurance&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243; header_3_font_size=&#8221;30px&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Border formalities<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;3_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"border-control-you-may-have-to-show-your-return-ticket-and-money\">Border control: you may have to show your return ticket and money<\/h3>\n<p>EU fast-track lanes for passport control will no longer be open to British travellers, although countries that receive a large number of visitors from the UK, such as Spain and Portugal, may make special arrangements. The process is likely to be slower, and with no guarantee of entry.<\/p>\n<p>At present, all a border official can do is to check that the travel document is valid, and that it belongs to you.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">At border control, you may now need to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>show a return or onward ticket<\/li>\n<li>show you have enough money for your stay<\/li>\n<li>use separate lanes from<span>\u00a0<\/span><abbr title=\"European Union\">EU<\/abbr>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><abbr title=\"European Economic Area\">EEA<\/abbr><span>\u00a0<\/span>and Swiss citizens when queueing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_4,3_4&#8243; admin_label=&#8221;length of stay&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;55px|0px|55px|0px|true|false&#8221; use_custom_width=&#8221;on&#8221; collapsed=&#8221;on&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Subtitle: insurance&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243; header_3_font_size=&#8221;30px&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Length of Stay<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;3_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>From 1 January 2021, the EU\u2019s long-standing \u201c90\/180 rule\u201d takes effect for British travellers, as the UK chooses to become a third country.<\/p>\n<p>For business travellers who normally stay a long time in Europe, it has significant effects. You may stay only 90 days (about three months) in any 180 (six months) in the Schengen area \u2013 comprising almost all the EU countries except Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Romania. (Ireland is also non-Schengen, but is part of the Common Travel Area with freedom of movement to and from the UK and smaller islands.)<\/p>\n<p>Example: if you spend January, February and March in the Schengen Area \u2013 totalling 90 days \u2013 you must leave the zone before 1 April and cannot return until 30 June.<\/p>\n<p>You will then be able to spend the summer in Europe until 27 September, when you must leave again. You may not come back until Boxing Day.<\/p>\n<p>Any time spent in the Schengen Area up to the end of 2020 does not count. So if you spend December in Spain, the clock does not start ticking until New Year\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n<p>The European Union has a useful online \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/home-affairs\/content\/visa-calculator_en\">short-stay visa calculator<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The UK government says: \u201cDifferent rules will apply to Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Romania. If you\u00a0visit\u00a0these countries,\u00a0visits\u00a0to other\u00a0EU\u00a0countries will not count towards the 90-day total.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>British citizens can stay as long as they like in the Republic of Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>People who have a work or residential visa for a specific EU country will be treated differently.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_4,3_4&#8243; admin_label=&#8221;Over stay&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;55px|0px|55px|0px|true|false&#8221; use_custom_width=&#8221;on&#8221; collapsed=&#8221;on&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Subtitle: overstay&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243; header_3_font_size=&#8221;30px&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What happens if I over stay?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;3_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>In general travellers are given three days\u2019 grace. Any longer than that and they are likely to be handed an entry ban for one year. This applies throughout the Schengen Area \u2013 not just the country in which you overstayed.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><b>Can\u2019t I just nip across the border and \u2018re-set the clock\u2019?<\/b><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>No. The 90\/180 rule applies to the entire Schengen Zone. If you leave the zone (for example by returning to the UK or crossing from Slovenia into Croatia) that exit will be recorded on the central database.<\/p>\n<p>When you return, the frontier officials will check to see how much of your allowance has been used and remains.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_4,3_4&#8243; admin_label=&#8221;Visas&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;55px|0px|55px|0px|true|false&#8221; use_custom_width=&#8221;on&#8221; collapsed=&#8221;on&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Subtitle: visas&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243; header_3_font_size=&#8221;30px&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Visas<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;3_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"visas-for-short-trips-you-will-not-need-one-if-youre-a-tourist\">Visas for short trips: you will not need one if you\u2019re a tourist<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">If you\u2019re a tourist, you will not need a visa for short trips to most\u00a0<\/span><abbr title=\"European Union\" style=\"font-size: 18px;\">EU<\/abbr><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\u00a0countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. You\u2019ll be able to stay for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Different rules will apply to Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Romania. If you\u00a0visit\u00a0these countries,\u00a0visits\u00a0to other\u00a0<abbr title=\"European Union\">EU<\/abbr>\u00a0countries will not count towards the 90-day total.<\/p>\n<p>You may need a visa or permit to stay for longer, to work or study, or for<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/visit-europe-1-january-2021\/business-travel-extra-requirements\">business travel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div role=\"note\" aria-label=\"Information\" class=\"application-notice info-notice\">\n<p>Check each country\u2019s<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/foreign-travel-advice\">travel advice page<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>for information on how to get a visa or permit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Travel to Ireland will not change from 1 January 2021. From the start of 2021, the European Union will be treated the same as the rest of the world \u2013 which means that there are now restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>For alcohol, the limits are 4 litres of spirits or 9 litres of sparkling wine, 18 litres of still wine and 16 litres of beer, which hopefully will see you through at least an evening. Arrivals to the UK will also qualify to bring in 200 duty-free cigarettes.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAnything that increases the availability of tobacco is a negative step for public health,\u201d the British Medical Association says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If you exceed any of these limits, you will pay tax on the whole lot.\u00a0There is a limit of \u20ac430 \u2013 roughly \u00a3400 \u2013 for all other goods, from Camembert to clothing.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_4,3_4&#8243; admin_label=&#8221;Health Care&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;55px|0px|55px|0px|true|false&#8221; use_custom_width=&#8221;on&#8221; collapsed=&#8221;on&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Subtitle: health care&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243; header_3_font_size=&#8221;30px&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Health Care<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;3_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>Your European Health Insurance Card (<abbr title=\"European Health Insurance Card\">EHIC<\/abbr>) will continue to be valid if you\u2019re travelling to an<span>\u00a0<\/span><abbr title=\"European Union\">EU<\/abbr><span>\u00a0<\/span>country.<\/p>\n<p>You can use a<span>\u00a0<\/span><abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr><span>\u00a0<\/span>passport to get medically necessary healthcare in Norway (for example emergency treatment, or to treat a pre-existing condition).<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re travelling to Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein, you should get appropriate travel insurance with healthcare cover before you travel. Make sure it covers any pre-existing conditions that were previously covered by your European Health Insurance Card (<abbr title=\"European Health Insurance Card\">EHIC<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>You can read advice on<span>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #6d6e71;\">buying travel insurance with the right cover<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/foreign-travel-insurance\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"United Kingdom\" style=\"color: #5b8cb1; font-family: century-old-style-std, serif; font-size: 22px;\">UK<\/abbr><span style=\"color: #5b8cb1; font-family: century-old-style-std, serif; font-size: 22px;\">-issued EHICs after 1 January 2021<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Some people can apply for a new<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\u00a0<\/span><abbr title=\"United Kingdom\" style=\"font-size: 18px;\">UK<\/abbr><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\u00a0<\/span><abbr title=\"European Health Insurance Card\" style=\"font-size: 18px;\">EHIC<\/abbr><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">that they can continue to use from 1 January 2021 in the<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\u00a0<\/span><abbr title=\"European Union\" style=\"font-size: 18px;\">EU<\/abbr><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.
