For example, if you take a GBP-issued card and pay for a meal charged in euros in Italy, you\u2019ll be handed a payment machine and given the choice between paying in EUR or GBP.<\/p>\n You may also be given this option at a cash machine\/ATM.\u00a0 You may be encouraged by the machine to select home currency after seeing information like \u201cChoosing home currency to lock in your rate now and avoid any currency fluctuations\u201d.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n While it may be enticing and convenient to choose that home currency then and there, you should always choose local currency and not home currency. <\/b>The reason for that is that where the merchant or cash machine operator calculates a conversion rate to give you a home currency figure then and there to select, they will give you an awful rate, far below market exchange rates.<\/p>\n Why? Because they can pocket the difference. They can offer you any rate you want and if you accept it, they can process it at that rate and the saving they make against the market exchange rate is easy profit for them.<\/p>\n For example, if you were to make a purchase of \u20ac120, you would expect this to cost you the equivalent of around \u00a3100. But we\u2019ve seen foreign cash machines and in-store payment terminals offer to set the exchange rate at a rate around 1 GBP = 1 EUR, meaning your \u20ac120 purchase will cost you around \u00a3120.<\/p>\n This is an awful rate!<\/p>\n <\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_cta admin_label=”call out” _builder_version=”4.17.6″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” title=”Always select local currency. ” sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n <\/p>\n [\/et_pb_cta][et_pb_text admin_label=”part 2″ _builder_version=”4.17.6″ _module_preset=”default” header_2_font_size=”20px” custom_margin=”0%||0%||true|false” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n If a bank-teller or shop owner or waiter tries to convince you to pay using your home currency, do not agree \u2014 insist on local currency.
