The Australian airline&#8217;s latest non-stop route is a mammoth 16.5 hour odyssey that takes passengers from New York to Aukland and then on to Sydney.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s a huge journey that sits firmly in the top 10 list of all-time longest commercial flight routes, sitting just an hour shy of United Airlines Houston (IAH) to Sydney (SYD) route. See, your sleep cycle is more flexible than you might think, meaning if you \u2018miss\u2019 a night\u2019s sleep, you\u2019ll build up a \u2018sleep debt\u2019 that can be paid off simply by adding more hours the following night. When you\u2019re jet lagged, your body will produce the hormone at odd times of day, which is why you might feel tired during the day and wide awake at night. It\u2019s important to say that melatonin is a prescription-only drug in the UK, meaning we cannot recommend taking it without first seeking the advice of your GP. That said, multiple studies have found melatonin supplements tend to be highly effective at reducing the effects of jet lag, since they act as a signifier of sleep to the body, so this might be worth considering. The disappointing truth, however, is that not only will alcohol affect the quality of any sleep you get, but it also won\u2019t\u00a0help prevent jet lag. Instead, you run the risk of being jet lagged\u00a0and\u00a0hungover. When you\u2019re jet lagged, your body may start to produce melatonin when you might not want it, so a strategic dose of caffeine could minimise the effects. Try to wake up as close to sunrise as possible and expose yourself to the emerging sunlight. And make an active effort to shut out the light, come sunset, in order to gradually ease your body back into its usual cycle. His 1983 book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wob.com\/en-gb\/books\/charles-f-ehret-ph-d\/overcome-jet-lag-tr\/9780425058770\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">Overcoming Jet Lag<\/span><\/a>, recommends a four-day eating pattern, incorporating high-protein, high-carb, low-calorie meals, timed around periods of feasting and fasting, plus light exercises to keep the body stimulated until it\u2019s time to sleep. In the meantime, we can take solace in knowing that extreme cases of jet lag last no longer than a couple of weeks, and that the symptoms \u2013 while annoying \u2013 are usually not serious.<\/p>\n<p>So, if you\u2019ve found a jet lag cure that works for you, that\u2019s great. But if not, don\u2019t worry too much \u2013 you\u2019ll soon get over your symptoms.
